British Telecom Calls for Internet Safety Tax on Google, Facebook

A British Telecom company is urging Facebook and Google to put money into an internet safety campaign.  If they won’t do it voluntarily, the telecom wants the Social media giants to be forced to fund the campaign.

Telecoms giant Sky wants social media companies such as Google and Facebook to be forced to fund a compulsory internet safety campaign backed by a multi-million pound levy.

The Government has previously put forward plans and said it would merely be a voluntary arrangement.

The company has suggested the scheme could mirror a Government levy on the horse race betting industry which funds veterinary science and improvements to the sport.

That is calculated on the profits of bookmakers and raises up to £70 million a year.
