Cycle of Forgetting

Try to imagine that girl as she

lay upon your chest,

hand splayed on your shoulder,

cheek warming your

chest.

I have tried to remember it,

thought as the chance occurred:

“I will break the cycles of forgetting

and know without having to have her here

the effervescence within me now”

It leaves me as soon

as she shifts her body from mine.

Imagine.

The girl reaches across your body

and you smell the breath of her.

It is not a perfume,

nor an odour, but,

the unique signature a body tells

to other bodies.

You want to say to yourself:

“I will break the cycles of forgetting

and know without having to have her here

the effervescence within me now”

It leaves me as soon

as she leaves my presence.

Imagine.

The girl was walking

in the way she does.

She was laughing in the way she does.

Her face was a beaming bloom of life burst

from the sun,

and you told yourself you would

hold her and kiss her and know that

joy she seemed to know.

You held her, you kissed her

and you knew that joy she seemed to know,

but

You only knew it when she was there,

in your presence.

You could not break the cycle of forgetting.
